Task:
Based upon the reading of this module and the evaluation rubrics introduced in Modules 6 and 7, what are the top 6 evaluation dimensions that are important and appropriate in your subject discipline and grade level? Identify these evaluation dimensions and elaborate/justify them in details by citing sources introduced in this course.
The following dimensions are the most relative to evaluating apps and web- based games for Kindergarten students in ELA. Each dimension equally upholds the quality of what an education app or web- based app will need to exude in order to meet the needs of kindergarten students in ELA.
Ease of Use: This dimension is very important because if users find an app easy to use, they will be more likely to engage in it. Young students need to be able to learn how to use the app immediately without struggling with the mechanics.
Interest: This dimension focuses on how easily likeable the app is for students. Kindergarten students need an app that can keep their ever-changing attention. They need a fun format that relates to the topic they are learning.
Feedback to the teacher: This dimension focuses on how the app allows teachers to monitor student progress. Teachers need to know student scores, errors made, how many rounds a student has played, and over all success. All this information helps teachers build personalized instruction for kindergarten students. Young students are not always able to identify their needs so utilizing feedback from an education game or app helps understand the mind set of the student when they are playing the game.
Level of learning material: This dimension focuses on making sure the targeted audience matches the level of learning material. It is important for the materials to be cognitively and developmentally appropriate for an early childhood age group. Kindergarten also has a variety of targeted audience so the best apps have a variety of learning materials for the same content area.
Value of errors: This dimension focuses on how an app or web- based game allows students to learn from their errors. I think it is important for early childhood students to receive immediate and specific feedback for direct instruction.
Cooperative Learning: This dimension focuses on how students to work on group projects together. This is important for early childhood students because we are constantly building on social skills and cooperating learning in an academic setting. The best apps allow students to share learning goals.
